Most Togolese Concerned About Access to Health Care
Health care ranks as the second most pressing issue that citizens want the government to address.
Findings from Afrobarometer Round 10 show that few Togolese have medical coverage, while many are either unaware of such services or cannot afford them. As a result, a large share of citizens worry about their ability to obtain or pay for needed care for themselves or their families. Two-thirds believe the government should guarantee universal access to health care, even if it requires higher taxes.
Regarding public hospitals, more than half of users say access is relatively easy, but significant barriers remain: high costs, long waiting times, shortages of medicines, outdated infrastructure, lack of staff, and sometimes requests for bribes. Despite these challenges, most citizens acknowledge government efforts to improve basic health services.
On vaccination, three out of four Togolese think parents should be required to vaccinate their children, though a minority believe it should remain a personal choice.
